In a Hardee County courtroom, 67-year-old Tracey Nix received a five-year prison sentence for leaving her 7-month-old granddaughter, Uriel Schock, unattended in a hot car, leading to the infant's death. According to FOX 35 Orlando, despite her conviction on the charge, Nix was acquitted of aggravated manslaughter after a jury trial in Polk County to ensure impartiality. Her sentence was announced nearly two-and-a-half years after the November 1, 2022 incident, when temperatures soared into the 90s.
During the sentencing hearing, both Nix's daughter, Kaila Nix-Schock, and her son-in-law, Drew Schock, expressed deep emotional distress. ABC Action News detailed Drew Schock's struggle with the recurrent memory of losing a child, stating, "My wife and I are the ones who are going to have to live with this." The trial was marked by tearful testimonies from family members, including Tracey Nix's husband, who spoke about the impact of the tragedy on their family life, social media scrutiny, and the prescription medication Nix was taking at the time of her granddaughter's death.
Adding to the complexity of the case is an earlier incident involving Nix. Another grandchild, Ezra, had previously drowned while in her care, a detail excluded from this trial but reported by Hoodline. During the court proceedings, Kaila Nix expressed a conflicted perspective, recognizing the outcome as "a win for justice" for her daughter and a tremendous personal loss.
Nix's defense presented evidence that she had been under the influence of medications that could affect attention and memory at the time of the incident. Still, the state prosecutor questioned whether these effects were relevant to the day Uriel was left in the vehicle. Despite the defense's arguments and a psychiatrist's testimony about the potential influence of Nix's medications, Judge Rafool remained unconvinced, underscoring his perception of a lack of genuine remorse by stating, "Sorrow is not the same as remorse," and proceeded to impose the maximum sentence allowed, as reported by ABC Action News.
