Folsom Police have chosen the checkpoint location based on data indicating a history of traffic collisions related to impaired driving. In a statement obtained by the Folsom Police Department's Facebook page, Sergeant Tim Galovich emphasized the danger posed by impaired drivers, asserting, “Impaired drivers put others on the road at significant risk.” Moreover, the department took the chance to remind the public that substances causing impairment extend beyond alcohol, including certain prescription medications, over-the-counter drugs, and marijuana—even though the latter may be legal for medicinal and recreational use, driving under its influence is not.
The financial consequences for individuals charged with a first-time DUI are substantial, comprising an average sum of $13,500 in fines and penalties, as well as a suspended license.
