The historic train depot at 200 Wool Street in Folsom's Historic District has reopened. Once part of the Sacramento Valley Railroad—the first railroad west of the Mississippi—the building has been updated for community use. It now includes office space, a meeting room, and a professional backstage area for performers called the Peter T. Lewis Green Room.
The restoration blends the old structure with modern use. The Freight Room keeps its original look but is now functional for current needs. It will serve as the headquarters for the Folsom Historic District Association and host local events. Board member Jerry Bernau played a key role in making the project happen through his volunteer work.
It's clear that the effort to preserve the past while catapulting it into the usefulness of today was no Sunday picnic. Crucial donations in cash, materials, and labor all played a role. According to the official website for Historic Folsom, "The project was made possible through cash, materials, and in-kind donations from local organizations, private donors, and volunteers."
