Over the weekend, a profound tragedy diminished the bright sparks of a distinguished family when a small plane crashed in Upstate New York, claiming the lives of six individuals. According to ABC7 New York, the victims included former NCAA woman of the year Karenna Groff, her parents, and three others, as they traveled to a Passover celebration.
The ill-fated aircraft, a twin-engine Mitsubishi MU-2B, met its final moments near Copake, a quaint town about 50 miles south of Albany. Notably, at least two of the deceased had ties to the New York City area. The pilot had reported a missed approach to Columbia County Airport and was receiving instructions before the crash, a scene captured on video that showed the plane in a high-rate descent, with no visible structural issues until it met the ground, CBS News reported.
Amid attempts to ascertain the cause of this calamity, the Federal Aviation Administration revealed that the air traffic control had made several attempts to warn the pilot about low altitude, alas, a response was never forthcoming. Investigators predict around a week of examination at the site as they unravel the factors that led to the incident.
The sorrow has rippled through various communities, touching academic and medical fields alike, as Karenna was a student at the NYU Grossman School of Medicine and an MIT soccer star, while her parents, Dr. Michael Groff and Dr. Joy Saini, were respected medical professionals. A statement released by the surviving family members, "We will remember them as the six brilliant, dynamic, and loving people that they were," as obtained by CBS News.
In honoring the memory of Karenna, NYU spoke to her remarkable blend of talent and compassion, saying, "Karenna demonstrated exceptional skill and unwavering passion towards the care of patients and the mission of our institution. We will remember her for her warmth, her grace, her kindness, her outstanding accomplishments, and the pure joy she brought to our community," as echoed by CBS News. In addition, Karenna's boyfriend, James Santoro had been preparing for a marriage proposal, further deepening the resonance of this unexpected tragedy within the circle of loved ones.
