Last Friday, a solemn tragedy unfolded on a stretch of San Geronimo Valley Road as a solo-vehicle crash claimed the lives of four teenage students and left two critically injured. The California Highway Patrol's Marin Area office, as reported by a social media post from CHP Marin, responded to the accident near the intersection with Sir Francis Drake Boulevard in the bucolic outskirts of West Marin around 7:30 p.m.
The crash involved a Volkswagen SUV failing to maintain course, ultimately colliding with a tree off the road's shoulder. Authorities ascertained that six juveniles, all between the ages of 14 and 16, were inside the vehicle at the time of the crash. Officers and personnel from the Marin County Sheriff's Office and the Marin County Fire Department arrived quickly at the scene. Tragically, three of the passengers were pronounced dead on site, while a fourth succumbed to their injuries after being transported to a local healthcare facility. The driver and another occupant were hospitalized in a state that can only be described as critical.
CHP Marin Area Commander Capt. Amy Newton extended her deepest condolences to the affected families and friends. "On behalf of the California Highway Patrol, I extend our deepest condolences to the families, friends, and classmates of the four young students whose lives were tragically lost in this heartbreaking crash," she conveyed, per CHP Marin. "No words can ease the pain of such a devastating loss, and our hearts are with the entire community as they grieve."
Local reporter Henry K. Lee, noted in a social media update, identified the students as attendees of Archie Williams High School in San Anselmo. The community was shaken as the news spread, impacting families, friends, and schoolmates tied to the young individuals. The roadway remained closed for several hours following the crash, reopening at 1:45 AM, as the authorities were working to thoroughly understand the events that led up to the tragedy, which remains under investigation.
