After the festivities of the French Quarter Festival concluded yesterday evening, at least four individuals were shot in what appears to be a brazen act of violence amidst a bustling New Orleans backdrop. The incident occurred around 8:30 p.m. near the intersection of Iberville and Decatur streets, according to reports from WWLTV.
An officer directing the crowd post-festival observed the shooter and swiftly alerted his colleagues. The NOPD then arrested a suspect just a block from the scene. As mentioned by NOLA.com, Eighth District Capt. Sammy Palumbo described the boldness of the shooter, who opened fire in front of officers. Despite the close range of the incident, the victims' injuries are reported as non-life-threatening.
The New Orleans Police Department has not commented on a possible motive for the shooting, as the investigation is currently ongoing. However, authorities have confirmed that multiple firearms were retrieved from the vicinity. While the NOPD has yet to release any details regarding the identities of those involved, they did affirm that none of the victims were juveniles, as reported by WDSU.
All victims were promptly transported to the hospital for treatment after each suffering at least one gunshot wound to the body. Witnesses on the scene recounted hearing at least 10 shots fired, plunging the area into a state of panic as officers worked to secure the scene and disperse remaining crowds. The violence prompted NOPD to erect crime scene tape, stretching across several blocks along Canal Street, alluding to the chaos that had taken place. As per statements given by witnesses to WDSU, the abrupt nature of the shooting disrupted the festival's peaceful denouement.
