Oklahoma and parts of northern Texas are bracing for a cold spell, with the National Weather Service in Norman issuing a Freeze Watch for the region. According to the weather update, temperatures are expected to drop as low as 29 degrees Fahrenheit beginning late tonight and continuing through tomorrow morning. The advisory covers a wide area, including central, east central, northern, northwest, southeast, southern, southwest, and western Oklahoma, as well as northern Texas. Cities such as Oklahoma City, Norman, and Wichita Falls are included in the watch.
Local farmers and gardeners are likely already feeling the chill, as sensitive plants and crops are at risk of being hit hard by the sub-freezing temperatures. The National Weather Service emphasizes, "Frost and freeze conditions could kill crops, other sensitive vegetation and possibly damage unprotected outdoor plumbing." As these conditions sweep over the Plains, residents are advised to take measures to safeguard their plants and outdoor pipes to prevent any cold weather damage. While necessary, the sudden shift to wintry conditions is a stark contrast to the mild weather experienced in the region just last week.
The weather disturbance begins with a likelihood of rain and snow showers before 7 a.m. today. Although snow accumulation is expected to be less than half an inch, the shift signals a quick transition to colder nights and frosty mornings. Oklahoma City, no stranger to sudden weather changes, is forecasted to reach a high of 53 degrees today following a cloudy start. By tonight, temperatures will drop again, with patches of frost expected to form after 4 a.m.
Looking ahead, there's a silver lining as the weekly forecast anticipates a gradual warming trend. By tomorrow, areas of frost are expected before late morning, giving way to a sunny day with highs climbing to around 65. And the climb continues with Tuesday projected to hit a high near 71 degrees, and Wednesday even warmer at a high near 78. These more hospitable conditions can't come soon enough for the locals who, are already bracing for a frosty night that could see the last of the winter chill before the season concedes to spring's advance.
