Jim "Mattress Mack" McIngvale has announced the impending closure of Gallery Furniture's Post Oak showroom, with plans for a large-scale blowout sale to mark the end of the location's 16-year run. Revealed via posts on the company's website and social media channels last week, the 30,000-square-foot store at 2411 Post Oak Blvd., Gallery Furniture's second and smallest branch, will soon shut its doors, though a specific closing date has not been detailed.
Alongside the announcement, McIngvale has also touted the beginning of what the renowned furniture mogul is dubbing the "epic blowout sale," with the Houston icon characterizing it as the company's "biggest sale ever," to show appreciation for customers, the sale includes up to 70% off on furniture items at all remaining Gallery Furniture stores and online, as reported by Houston Chronicle. Underway across the Houston-based retailer's operations this move comes several years after McIngvale, also known for his philanthropic endeavors with events aimed at giving back to the community, disclosed the Post Oak location's struggle with reduced foot traffic, in significant part because of nearby bus lane construction.
Gallery Furniture will continue to serve the Houston area through its two other outlets, the original flagship store along I-45 and the sizable Richmond showroom, their existence signifies the brand's sustained presence in the region despite this consolidation, the original store, a 110,000-square-foot establishment, has been a fixture in north Houston since 1981, and the substantial 165,000-square-foot Richmond location opened its doors in 2015, as stated on KHOU announcement.
McIngvale's often lauded spirit of charity has not only seen him open his stores' doors as shelters in times of hurricane emergencies, but he has also been known for personal sacrifices like undergoing open heart surgery in 2024 and bouncing back to continue his community-centric approach, the businessman and philanthropist has indeed shaped a legacy that extends far beyond the realms of retail, as a testament to this, Gallery Furniture played an active role in aiding the community following the devastations of hurricanes Beryl and Harvey according to an interview reported in the Houston Chronicle.
