The Geauga County Sheriff's Office has issued a warning about a recent phone scam that's been tricking residents with a bogus jury duty threat. According to a post by Sheriff Scott A. Hildenbrand, scammers are calling victims, claiming they've missed jury duty and now face an arrest warrant. These fraudsters then instruct individuals to pay a 'fine' at the State Highway Patrol in Chardon to resolve the outstanding warrant. In a definitive statement on the matter, Hildenbrand asserts, "THIS IS A SCAM."
The sheriff's office is clear on one thing: no legitimate law enforcement entity will call demanding payment over the phone. Nor will they ever request fines to be paid through gift cards, wire transfers, or in person at a patrol post. Residents caught off guard by such calls should hang up immediately. The warning, garnering attention across social media, underpins a growing concern for the vulnerable victims of such deceit. "If you receive a call like this, hang up immediately," advises the sheriff's office on its Facebook page.
For those uncertain about the authenticity of a jury duty notification, the advice is straightforward: contact your local court directly to clarify any confusion. The sheriff's office reiterates the importance of direct communication with court authorities to avoid falling prey to these fraudulent schemes.
