The Georgetown community is preparing to say its final farewell to a respected member of the local fire department following a tragic incident that has deeply impacted the town. Kurt Lentz, a firefighter with the Georgetown Fire Department, lost his life in a motorcycle accident on April 11. The service to honor his memory is scheduled for 10 a.m. Thursday, April 17, at Celebration Church in Georgetown, as announced by the department. CBS Austin reported the details of the upcoming memorial.
Lentz's sudden death came after the crash, which occurred west of Wolf Ranch Parkway on US-29 around 9:13 a.m. He was off-duty and wearing a helmet while driving his motorcycle home. Lentz was transported to Ascension Seton Williamson Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries shortly before 10 a.m. "Kurt was proud to serve the City of Georgetown, and we are equally proud to honor his life and service," the fire department said in a statement recognizing the fallen firefighter.
In a statement expressing the department's sense of loss, "As a close-knit fire family, we are struggling through this loss," they shared their intention to turn their hearts, prayers, and support toward Lentz's wife, son, and family during this difficult period. The fire department, while requesting privacy for the grieving family, has invited members of the community who wish to express their condolences to send flowers to the memorial service at the church located at 601 Westinghouse Road.
The Texas Department of Public Safety is investigating the incident, while the Georgetown Fire Department, and by extension the community, grapple with the aftershock of the tragedy. "We are struggling," the agency said on social media, highlighting the profound impact of the loss and their commitment to supporting Lentz's family, according to KXAN. The service on April 17 will not only be a moment to remember Lentz but also a testament to the support network that first responders create amongst themselves and with the community they protect.
