The world is mourning the loss of Pope Francis, who passed away at the age of 88. Following the news of his death, tributes and reactions have surfaced from Catholics in Michigan to global leaders, reflecting on the pontiff's life and impact on the church and society.
As reported by CBS News Detroit, Michigan Catholics have expressed their sorrow and prayers in the wake of Pope Francis' death. At a press conference in Detroit, Archbishop Edward J. Weisenburger said, "It is with immense sadness that I share with the faithful of the Archdiocese of Detroit that our beloved Holy Father, Pope Francis, has died." Weisenburger praised the pope's dedication to poverty, peace, and environmental stewardship, and also encouraged the faithful to pray for the pope's soul and the quick election of his successor. Across the state, Catholic parishes and schools offered prayers for the late pontiff.
In a statement shared after the pope's death, Archbishop Timothy P. Broglio, president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, spoke of Pope Francis' outreach to those on the fringes of society, as obtained by Detroit Catholic. Broglio specifically mentioned the pope's support of migrants, the poor, and the unborn. Other U.S. bishops, ranging from Cardinal Timothy P. Dolan of New York to Archbishop Richard G. Henning of Boston, echoed these sentiments, delineating the breadth of Pope Francis' legacy.
Reactions to the pope's passing did not only come from within the church but from political figures as well. U.S. Vice President JD Vance, who met Pope Francis a day before his death, stated, "I just learned of the passing of Pope Francis. My heart goes out to the millions of Christians all over the world who loved him. I was happy to see him yesterday, though he was obviously very ill. But I’ll always remember him for the below homily he gave in the very early days of COVID. It was really quite beautiful. May God rest his sou," according to a post on X Vance shared as reported by Mid Michigan Now. World leaders, such as Britain's King Charles and Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi, also paid their respects and noted Francis' dedication to peace, the poor, and unity.
Pope Francis' death marks the end of a papacy known for its progressive views on social issues and deep empathy for the suffering. As the first Latin American pope, his bold stances on topics like capitalism and climate change earned both praise and criticism. His health struggles, including a long battle with lung disease, were well-known, with his hospitalization on February 14 drawing attention. Tributes from around the world highlight his lasting influence, which reached beyond religious lines.
