New York State is making moves to bolster mobile service coverage, especially in areas where it's notoriously spotty. Governor Kathy Hochul has announced a $5 million plan aimed at sparking innovation for those hard-to-reach spots. The initiative, part of the larger ConnectALL strategy which Hochul mentioned in her State of the State address, is now taking applications for ideas on how to improve wireless cellular coverage across the state, as reported on the government's official website.
"In today's digital world, reliable cellular service isn't a luxury – it's a necessity for public safety, economic opportunity, and quality of life,” Governor Hochul pointed out. The push for expanded coverage is not only about staying updated or binge-watching on the go, it's a critical infrastructure upgrade that can impact emergency services, the economy, and day-to-day living. According to Hochul, the investment via ConnectALL will help develop solutions to make sure all New Yorkers have reliable wireless access, no matter their location. This $5 million RFA is a significant move towards closing what's become known as the digital divide, as detailed by the Governor's office.
The details of the program suggest the state is prepared to grant around $1-2 million to about three projects, each promising open environments for varied service providers and innovating with new or existing technologies, Empire State Development President, CEO and Commissioner Hope Knight commented on the program, highlighting its role in empowering communities with the resources needed to get connected, despite the existing market challenges. ConnectALL is planning an information webinar soon with details on applying for the funding, which stakeholders can inquire about at [email protected].
Hochul's ConnectALL initiative includes several programs aimed at advancing broadband access and affordability in New York, from the Digital Equity Program's $50 million investment to the Affordable Housing Connectivity Program, which is set to deliver budget-friendly broadband to low-income households. The Municipal Infrastructure and ConnectALL Deployment Programs are working towards expanding broadband infrastructure extensively throughout the state, with significant federal funding support. New York State Senator Kristen Gonzalez emphasized the importance of the initiative, saying, “All New Yorkers, regardless of location, deserve access to reliable cell phone service and a connection to the digital world. I want to thank the Governor for opening this RFA and for investing in digital infrastructure and connectivity access in communities that need it most.” Assemblymember Steve Otis noted that addressing gaps in wireless coverage is key to public health, emergency response, and the economy, according to the same press release.
Application portals are now open and interested entities have until June 17, to submit their ideas.
