After a long hiatus, Green Meadows Petting Farm has joyously reopened its gates in Kissimmee, marking the first phase of an ambitious $150 million community space enhancement known as Lancaster Ranch Park. According to WESH, the project, which is set to engulf a sweeping 150 acres, will add bike and walking trails, playgrounds, a dog park, pavilions, and a direct connection to the Shingle Creek Bike Trail.
The park's vision, which is to grow while preserving the essence that positions Kissimmee uniquely substantially, has begun to take tangible shape with the reopening of the iconic petting farm. This landmark has historically planted itself firmly in the childhood memories of many locals. Matt Libby, assistant director of Kissimmee Parks and Recreation, reminisced to WESH, "It is fun to relive those memories when I was here yesterday at the ribbon cutting, seeing people feeding the animals and playing with the baby chickens. It's really fun."
The petting farm is not the sole highlight; the larger Lancaster Ranch Park development aims to foster community connections. Mayor Jackie Espinosa outlined the city's commitment to creating more family-friendly amenities, stating to ClickOrlando, "More green space, more family amenities, and more reasons to fall in love with Kissimmee." The plan also includes opportunities for kayaking and enjoying the outdoors.
It has been a long time since I've heard of a project of this scale in Kissimmee. The park carries the legacy of the local ranching heritage and the Lancaster family from whom the land was acquired. Despite the challenges and the wait, Keyes related to Around Osceola, "The city of Kissimmee has been tremendous,” he said. “Thank you for what you’ve done for our family." For now, citizens can enjoy a reanimated slice of their past with the farm's return as the next pieces of Lancaster Ranch Park slowly unfold into their grand positions within the community.
