
From March 24 to March 30, the Hawai‘i Police Department reported 25 driving under the influence arrests on Hawai‘i Island. Nine of these incidents led to traffic accidents, with two drivers under the age of 21, according to the Hawai‘i Police Department.
Driving under the influence arrests have increased to 240, up from 230 during the same period last year, showing a rise of 4.35%. Meanwhile, major crashes have decreased to 247 this year, compared to 255 in the previous year, as mentioned by the Hawai‘i Police Department.
There has been a decrease in fatal crashes and fatalities this year, with 7 fatal crashes and 8 deaths compared to 12 fatal crashes and 14 deaths at this time in 2024. This is a 41.7% reduction in fatal crashes and a 42.9% reduction in fatalities. The Hawai‘i Police Department continues to focus on reducing driving under the influence incidents through roadblocks and patrols, with checkpoints being a key enforcement tool. No non-traffic fatalities have been reported so far this year, the same as last year.
