Governor Josh Green has ordered the United States and Hawaiʻi state flags to be flown at half-staff at state offices, agencies, and the Hawaiʻi National Guard in honor of Pope Francis. This follows a proclamation by President Donald J. Trump, directing flags on federal grounds to be flown at half-staff until the Pope's interment, according to the Office of the Governor.
Flags were lowered in a ceremonial gesture of respect as Governor Green spoke on the passing of Pope Francis, stating, "Pope Francis was a beacon of compassion, humility, and service." In his statement from the Office of the Governor, Green also acknowledged the Pope’s efforts to support the marginalized and promote global unity.
Hawaiʻi Governor Green has called for reflection on Pope Francis’s messages of peace and care for the vulnerable. The Pope’s emphasis on social justice aligns with Hawaiʻi’s diverse communities. Flags were lowered in Hawaiʻi to honor the Pope and acknowledge his global influence. Governor Green also encouraged residents to continue the Pope’s work, stating, “His unwavering commitment to the marginalized and his call for global solidarity have left an indelible mark on the world,” as stated by the Office of the Governor.
