According to MLive, a valve failure at a Norton Shores pumping station led to as much as 87,400 gallons of raw sewage flooding into Mona Lake and Little Black Creek. The public has been warned to steer clear of these bodies of water—avoiding swimming, fishing, or wading—for at least 48 hours due to potential health hazards.
In a move reflective of the gravity of the situation, both Muskegon County and the city of Norton Shores have issued emergency advisories. Residents are strongly advised not to fish or let their pets near the contaminated waters. "avoid direct contact with (or fishing in) Little Black Creek and Mona Lake for the next 48 hours," stated the Muskegon County Health Department, as reported by WOODTV.
