Authorities in Heber City have taken a man into custody after an intense road rage altercation with a cyclist that culminated in a violent collision. The Heber City Police Department reported responding to a hit-and-run incident on April 13, where they found a cyclist had been struck, noticing "acceleration marks" on the scene that indicated a deliberate action. The cyclist suffered serious injuries, including a shattered leg, as detailed by FOX 13, in the arrest made last Saturday.
The incident was captured by surveillance cameras from a nearby UPS store, which depicted a gray Chevy truck failing to yield to a cyclist crossing the sidewalk. The cyclist seemed to have slapped the hood of the truck as he rode past, after which the vehicle allegedly turned, quickly accelerating towards the cyclist, and striking him before fleeing. A witness later aided in linking the suspect's vehicle to a residence on Tobiano Circle. KUTV reported on the surveillance footage and the witness account that led to the suspect's arrest.
The accused, identified as Russell, was confronted by police at his residence. During the interrogation, "Russell claimed that he felt threatened by the male and left in a hurry, not realizing he had hit him," as per ABC4. The affidavit goes further to express the officer's doubt about Russell's claim, stating, "Seeing how hard the male was struck, knowing the extent of the male’s injuries, and how damaged the bike was, I don’t believe Loren was unaware he hit the male."
Russell now faces charges stemming from the incident and has been booked into the Wasatch County Jail. While the allegations paint a bleak picture of events, it is important to remember that charges are allegations only, and as mentioned by ABC4, "All arrested persons are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt." With the legal process underway, the community waits for justice to be served in a case that has already left deep marks on the quiet streets of Heber City.
