A tragic accident occurred over the weekend in Hempfield Township, where a 68-year-old man lost his life after his vehicle veered off the road and struck a tree. According to reports from WPXI, the incident occurred yesterday afternoon at approximately 4:17 p.m. and involved a Ford pickup truck driven by Kenneth R. Altman, a resident of the same township.
After leaving the road on North Greengate Road, the pickup truck made a fatal collision with a tree. Westmoreland County Coroner Tim Carson confirmed that Altman was brought to Independence Health System Westmoreland Hospital, where his life was pronounced extinct. According to a small but critical detail shared by CBS News Pittsburgh, Altman was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash, and the airbags did deploy.
The coroner's office has labeled the incident as a motor vehicle fatality. Neither drugs nor alcohol is suspected to be a factor in the crash. Still, details from the ongoing investigation by Pennsylvania State Police may bring clarity to the full circumstances of this incident.
