Hillsborough County Mosquito Management Services (MMS) is celebrating 75 years of service in protecting public health and comfort from mosquitoes. On May 10, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., the community is invited to tour the Mosquito Management facility at 6527 Eureka Springs Rd, Tampa, FL. The event will feature interactive displays, facility tours, and a look at their aerial equipment, including a helicopter used for mosquito control.
According to the Hillsborough County release, the program began with the Davis Island Civic Association's efforts to combat mosquitoes through aerial spraying. After a tragic plane crash in 1947, the county established the Hillsborough County Mosquito Control in 1949, with funding secured through a special levy. In 1994, the program was moved under Public Works, where it continues its work today.
MMS monitors mosquito-borne diseases using 30 strategically placed traps and the Sentinel Chicken Program, which detects viruses in birds before they spread to humans. Education plays a crucial role in Mosquito Management's strategy and at the anniversary event, attendees will learn how to reduce mosquito breeding around their homes. The event will also highlight the various tools used in mosquito control, including the chicken, an early warning system for disease.
