In a move that marries education with hands-on experience, Hillsborough County Pet Resource Center has teamed up with Hillsborough Community College to offer veterinary technology students a real-world taste of shelter medicine. As reported by Hillsborough County, the collaboration is an innovative approach designed to enrich the learning process for students while simultaneously providing essential care to animals in need.
During a recent session last Wednesday, a group of 15 students were able to assist with various veterinary tasks, ranging from preparing surgical instruments to actively helping to quickly administer vaccines, microchipping, and participating in routine spay and neuter operations. With the veterinary technology program at HCC enrolling over 40 students each semester, this experience is poised to become a significant element of their veterinary education. This invaluable partnership is setting up to continue for current and future semesters.
The hands-on experience is not just beneficial for the students—it's also a boon for the Pet Resource Center's care team. Dealing with roughly 15,000 cats and dogs annually and conducting several hundred spay/neuter procedures every week, the shelter environment presents students with a unique learning opportunity. Shelter medicine requires a different skill set compared to traditional veterinary practice, and the PRC provides just the right backdrop for students to hone these skills.
On the brink of graduation, the student participants find opportunities like this to critically shape their skills and confidence for their ensuing veterinary careers. The mutual effort not only helps to prepare them better to face the real-world challenges of veterinary medicine but also ensures that the animals at PRC receive the highest quality of care while they await adoption into their forever homes.
