Originally a one-room frame schoolhouse built in 1910 and attended by 37 students just two years later, the site has weathered the years and transformations to now house multiple historical markers. The first schoolhouse at this location was actually destroyed by a hurricane in 1921, but a resilient community vouched to quickly rebuild a second structure. The current building was necessary as Lutz began quickly to expand, demanding a larger space to educate its youngsters.
The interior of the Old Lutz Schoolhouse, according to Hillsborough County, showcases an original design that included four classrooms on the first floor with a large auditorium upstairs. Over the years, the second floor was divided to add more classrooms and a teacher's room.
Despite its age, the Old Lutz Schoolhouse has not been allowed to simply fade into obscurity. The community took it upon themselves to maintain the landmark, organizing annual events that soon became staple fundraisers. Significant financial backing from Hillsborough County through the Historic Preservation Challenge Grant Program has additionally bolstered these local efforts. With various markers on the west side of the building, including the National Register of Historic Places marker and the Hillsborough County Historic Landmark marker, the schoolhouse's historical value has been definitively acknowledged.
