In a recent press conference, Aguilar, joined by Vice Chair Ted Lieu and other Democratic representatives, condemned Republican-led tariff policies, which they argue are triggering a severe downturn. "Republican incompetence is crashing the economy with reckless tariffs and bleeding the retirement accounts, of Americans dry," Aguilar was quoted as saying.
According to statements from the Democrats, these economic strategies are not merely abstract policy debates—they have a direct and tangible impact. Americans' pocketbooks are being hit hard, and the broader economy is, in their view, teetering on the brink due to what they describe as boneheaded policies. As Chairman Aguilar stated on the House Democrats’ official website, “We’re watching a global recession take hold because of the boneheaded policies of one person.” At the same time, Aguilar accused Republicans of preparing to cut Medicaid in order to finance tax cuts for the wealthy, calling it a “death blow to the American economy.”
Democrats are not staying silent on the matter of President Trump's absence at a recent solemn event either. Vice Chair Lieu highlighted this incident at the same press conference, lamenting the President's choice to prioritize a golf tournament over honoring fallen U.S. soldiers whose caskets had returned to the States. "President Trump should have been at that transfer ceremony for the four fallen U.S. soldiers, instead of at his golf tournament," Lieu stated, as reported by the same press release.
According to Democrats, the issue of tariffs could ultimately hit consumers the hardest—an outcome they are eager to highlight. Representative Lieu explained the mechanics of tariffs, noting that it is American companies—and, by extension, consumers—who bear the burden of these taxes, which then lead to higher prices on goods. Echoing Chairman Aguilar, Lieu advocated for alternative strategies that wouldn’t financially penalize everyday Americans, stating on the House Democrats’ official website, “There are ways to try to make competition more fair, but let’s not do it by increasing prices on Americans.”
