In a major operation targeting illegal gambling and money laundering in Houston, 16 individuals are facing serious charges. According to the U.S. Attorney's Office, this crackdown is being described as one of the largest efforts to eliminate illicit operations that have previously operated covertly in the region.
Leading the operation is 61-year-old Richmond resident Nizar Ali. Along with Ali, several individuals, both local and foreign nationals, have been arrested and are scheduled for their initial appearances before U.S. Magistrate Judge Christina Bryan. In addition to those indicted, authorities arrested 31 people on immigration and firearm charges during the sting on Wednesday, which also resulted in the capture of an individual accused of assaulting an officer, as revealed by the U.S. Attorney's Office.
The legal documents, unsealed at the same time as the arrests, claim that over $22 million in illegal gambling proceeds were generated by the operation. The crackdown, which spanned Houston and surrounding areas, led to the confiscation of cash, property, luxury watches, and other valuables. More than 700 law enforcement officers from 18 agencies participated in the sting, executing multiple warrants as they raided locations filled with slot machines and signs of a lavish lifestyle financed by illicit activities.
The accused face substantial prison sentences and fines. Ali, in particular, may face additional charges for allegedly offering more than half a million dollars in bribes to an undercover officer for illicit protection. The maximum fine for money laundering could reach up to $500,000, or twice the value of the property involved, while other charges may carry fines of up to $250,000 each.
Immigration and Customs Enforcement – Homeland Security Investigations (ICE-HSI) led the investigation, with support from the IRS Criminal Investigation (CI), Houston Police Department (HPD), and other federal and local law enforcement agencies. Assistant U.S. Attorneys are overseeing the legal process, with the case aiming to address the alleged criminal activities and prevent similar incidents in the future.
