Humble ISD has held more than 70 high school graduation ceremonies inside Reliant Stadium since 2005, and district officials are now scrambling to keep that streak alive after Harris County-Houston Sports Authority officials decided the stadium will no longer host commencement ceremonies at all. The policy shift, which affects every school district that has used the stadium for graduations, has sent Humble ISD families and trustees to Harris County Commissioners Court to plead for a reversal.
According to abc13.com, the stadium will no longer host graduation ceremonies for area school districts, with those events instead moving to the nearby Reliant Arena. As reported by houstonchronicle.com, the new policy applies to every school district that previously held graduations at Reliant Stadium, and Houston, Humble, Pasadena and Pearland ISDs all held commencement ceremonies there in 2025. Reliant Stadium, formerly known as NRG Stadium, sits within Reliant Park alongside Reliant Arena on a 350-acre, county-owned complex overseen by the Harris County-Houston Sports Authority, per Community Impact Newspaper.
Why the Sports Authority Made the Switch
The change is meant to keep Reliant Stadium available for concerts, sporting events and other large-scale bookings during a peak period on the venue's calendar, abc13.com reports. Graduation season is one of the busiest stretches on Reliant Park's live entertainment calendar, with high-profile concerts and Houston Texans games, per Community Impact. That outlet also reported that one successful concert could generate double or triple the stadium's typical graduation-period revenue.
Humble ISD Trustee Chris Parker said district officials were told concerts generate more revenue than high school graduations, according to abc13.com. Reliant Park officials pushed back on characterizations that the graduation program was disappearing entirely, telling the Houston Chronicle that Reliant Park is not ending its graduation program, since ceremonies will simply continue at the nearby, climate-controlled Reliant Arena.
A Capacity Gap That Worries Families
The math is at the heart of Humble ISD's objection. Reliant Arena has a capacity of roughly 6,500 to 7,500 people, with overflow arrangements that can stretch to as many as 12,000 visitors, per Community Impact. That's a problem for schools like Summer Creek High School, one of the largest in Texas with nearly 4,200 students in 2026, whose graduation usually draws about 12,700 people. Without access to Reliant Stadium, graduates districtwide would likely be limited to about six guests apiece, Community Impact reported.
District Communications Director Jamie Mount said Reliant Stadium is one of the few venues large enough to accommodate an unlimited number of guests per graduate for the district's larger high schools, according to Community Impact. Humble ISD officials separately told abc13.com that Reliant Stadium is the only venue in the area that allows graduates to bring their entire support groups. The district has also pointed to the stadium's indoor, climate-controlled setting as a longstanding draw — a factor humbleisd.net highlighted back in 2022, when the district noted that the stadium's air conditioning meant graduation could proceed as scheduled even in rain or lightning, and that families were not required to buy tickets and could bring as many guests as they wanted.
Commissioners Ask for a Second Look
Humble ISD community members brought their case to Harris County Commissioners Court earlier this month in hopes of reversing the decision, abc13.com reported, and commissioners responded by asking Harris County-Houston Sports Authority representatives to reconsider the policy, per Community Impact. Precinct 3 Commissioner Tom Ramsey said some high schools struggle to find indoor venues as large as Reliant Stadium, according to Community Impact's account of the discussion. Precinct 2 Commissioner Adrian Garcia proposed giving school districts the right of first refusal in selecting graduation dates, with Reliant Arena serving as a backup rather than the default venue.
Not every commissioner was on board with special treatment for the largest districts. Precinct 1 Commissioner Rodney Ellis said Reliant Park is a no-money complex and warned that offering guaranteed slots to large high schools could create inequity for smaller schools competing for the same dates, Community Impact reported. Sports Authority chair Martye Kendrick told the court the authority does not minimize concerns about graduations and said the agency would consider its options and bring them back to commissioners.
What Happens Next
Commissioners set no specific date for further action, according to Community Impact, though abc13.com reported the court's next meeting was scheduled for Sept. 17. The dossier reviewed for this report does not indicate what, if anything, commissioners decided at or after that meeting. In the meantime, Humble ISD has been offered Reliant Arena for its May 2027 graduations, and Trustee Chris Parker said the district is willing to be very flexible with the graduation date as it tries to preserve access to the stadium.
Summer Creek High School Principal Matthew Mahony summed up the district's stance simply, telling Community Impact that graduation is a milestone that everybody cherishes. Humble ISD's ceremonies fall during the same crowded window as commencement events across the greater Houston area, according to Community Impact, meaning graduation venues face extensive demand during the busiest stretch of the school calendar. Reliant Stadium did not host graduations in May 2026 at all, after FIFA took control of the venue on May 15 ahead of the 2026 World Cup, forcing several districts to find ceremonies elsewhere, according to the Houston Chronicle.
