A 25-year-old suspect, LaPatrick Deshawn Mitchell, faces murder charges in connection with a 2023 fatal shooting that claimed the life of John Williams, aged 68, in his home on Westcott Street, authorities reported. In the Houston Police Department's news release, which can be found here, details emerged that the incident took place around 11:20 p.m. on February 21, 2023, and Mitchell, who is currently serving time for an unrelated charge, now faces a new battle in the 230th State District Court.
According to the HPD Homicide Division's Sergeant W. Dunn and Detective M. Hughey, Mr. Williams was found with gunshot wounds inside his residence, transported to an area hospital, to where he was admitted to the emergency room, and unfortunately succumbed to his injuries on May 16, 2023, due to complications sustained from the gunshot wounds, they said after consulting with the Harris County District Attorney's Office Mitchell was charged for this role in the shooting.
Investigators developed leads based on evidence at the crime scene that initially identified a person of interest in the shooting. Further probing and forensic testing conclusively matched the DNA found on site to that of Mitchell, linking him directly to the tragic event, as the Houston Police detailed in the official statement. The evidence paved the way for formal charges to be laid against Mitchell after discussions with the District Attorney's Office.
