A Houston man, Hosmel Vences, has been sentenced to four years in federal prison for leading a conspiracy to transport undocumented immigrants into the United States. The 29-year-old, who pleaded guilty on May 22, 2024, will also serve three years of supervised release after his imprisonment, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office release.
During the hearing, Vences disputed claims about his role as the organizer, his involvement with weapons, and the reckless nature of his actions. U.S. District Judge Nelva Gonzales Ramos rejected his objections and found Vences responsible for organizing the transportation of at least 75 individuals between August and December 2023.
The U.S. Attorney's Office revealed that Vences recruited drivers across South Texas to transport the immigrants, directing them and paying them for successful trips. Vences also posted on social media about the profits from his role in the smuggling ring.
The case is part of Operation Take Back America, a law enforcement effort targeting illegal immigration and criminal organizations. The investigation was conducted by Immigration and Customs Enforcement - Homeland Security Investigations, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Joseph Griffith handling the case.
