The Illinois landscape of employment has hit a new milestone, according to an announcement from the State of Illinois. In March, the state's nonfarm payrolls surged by 14,800 jobs, bringing the total to an impressive 6,172,300 - a figure that not only marks a month-over-month increase but also sets a new record in the state's employment history. This uptick follows a positive revision of the February payroll statistics, shifting from an initially reported dip of 6,500 jobs to a gain of 900.
The unchanged unemployment rate, standing firm at 4.8 percent in March, shows a steady labor market, even as job gains bloom. Government roles led the pack, with an increase of 4,500 positions, while areas such as Trade, Transportation, and Utilities, and Private Education and Health Services also noted substantial growth. However, not all sectors saw this ascension; Information and Financial Activities experienced minor job decreases.
Compared to data from the year prior, Illinois has seen a net gain of 34,200 jobs. Government positions surged by a sizable 20,900, with the Private Education and Health Services sector following closely behind with a 19,800 uptick, as reported by the State of Illinois. Leisure and Hospitality also enjoyed an increase in available jobs. Yet, it's not a universal success story — Professional and Business Services, Manufacturing, and Construction sectors observed employment contractions.
"Today's data is a marked bright spot for the Illinois labor market, its workers, and employers," Deputy Governor Andy Manar commented on the state's labor performance. Kristin Richards, Director of the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity (DCEO), shared a similar sentiment. "The record-breaking job growth throughout Illinois is a true testament to the State's commitment to supporting its world-class workforce," she told the State of Illinois.
Despite the robust job figures, the number of unemployed workers edged up slightly to 321,500. Yet, these are countered by figures from the previous year, showing a decline of 2.5 percent in unemployment. IDES continues to play a crucial role in this ecosystem, not only by organizing job fairs and hiring events but also by maintaining Illinois JobLink, the state's largest job search engine, now boasting 62,346 posted resumes and 77,972 job postings.
