Brooklyn's streets witnessed an unusual scene earlier this week when a group disguised as utility workers conducted what appeared to be an impromptu excavation into the city's underbelly. According to ABC7NY, the incident unfolded on Monday afternoon on 17th Avenue in Bensonhurst, leading to the apprehension of several individuals by the NYPD.
Witnesses observed the group, sporting safety vests, direct traffic before prying open a manhole, and descending into the depths below, PIX11 News obtained footage shows. One person strategically remained above ground to reseal the entry point and maintain watch. The sightings raised local suspicions, which culminated in a call to 9-1-1 around 5 p.m., prompting a police response that would last several hours.
The NYPD took into custody Zion McKensie, 25, Shawan Thompson, 26, who was caught sitting vigil on a folding chair, and Willie Green, 39. These suspects now face multiple charges including burglary, possession of burglar tools, criminal facilitation, and criminal mischief. Details of the motivation behind their subterranean foray remain unclear, though there is speculation that the group intended to scour the sewers for potentially valuable lost items.
"It's very surprising, but you know what, the criminals are very smart these days," Janine Vitiello, an employee in the vicinity, told PIX11 News. Conversely, Lou Venturelli commented on the suspect's lack of bona fide equipment, saying "needed some more cones and stuff like that to make them look more professional."
While three suspects are now apprehended, the NYPD's investigation continues, as two additional individuals seen in the video remain at large.
