An investigation is underway following the death of Shane Lanham, a 28-year-old inmate at the Eastern Correctional Institution in Westover, Maryland. As reported by Maryland State Police, Lanham was declared deceased last Saturday by emergency medical personnel after being found unresponsive.
Officials were alerted to the situation on Saturday when the Maryland State Police Homicide Unit was contacted by the Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services Internal Investigative Unit (DPSCS IID). Lanham, who was serving a sentence at the state prison, reportedly was in a cell with another inmate before the discovery of his condition. Responders from the Maryland State Police, including crime scene technicians from the Forensic Sciences Division, arrived to process the scene.
A suspect, also housed at the correctional facility, has been identified in connection with the incident. This individual has not been charged and remains unnamed pending the active investigation.
