
Anoka County Parks is inviting community members to roll up their sleeves and take part in the Mighty Mississippi Cleanup Challenge this April as volunteers come together to rid the riverbanks of trash and debris. Starting April 18, there will be three cleanup events across different locations, offering a chance for residents to contribute to the health and beauty of the Mississippi River.
The cleanups are scheduled to kick off from 9 a.m. to noon on Friday, April 18 at the Coon Rapids Dam Regional Park, where interested volunteers should gather at the Visitor Center; continuing the effort on Tuesday, April 22, supporters will meet at Riverfront Regional Park's boat launch and the series concludes at Mississippi West Regional Park on Saturday, April 26 where the meeting point is at the trailhead parking lot, the City of Coon Rapids' official website has detailed the timings and venues, providing further instructions for participants to RSVP online or via phone call.
Those participating in the cleanup events are reminded to wear closed-toe shoes and gloves, while Anoka County Parks will supply garbage and recycle bags to sort out waste and recyclables, in addition to handling the removal of larger or hazardous items with the assistance of their staff and equipment, ensuring that every piece of refuse collected is properly disposed of or recycled accordingly.
"Every year I am excited about this event as it brings members of our communities together with a common goal of improving the quality of the Mississippi River," District 3 Commissioner Jeff Reinert, who is the county’s lead commissioner on Parks, expressed his anticipation saying he is thankful for all the volunteers who take time to make a difference; in a statement obtained by the City of Coon Rapids' website, with the event's success being a testament to the power of community involvement in conservation efforts.
The cleanup challenge also comes with a digital component for those involved to share moments from their volunteering experience using the hashtag #winneristheriver on social media platforms, further raising awareness about the importance of maintaining our natural resources and fostering a sense of stewardship among the public, contributing to a legacy of a cleaner and healthier river for future generations to enjoy and cherish.
