Ramsey County has officially announced Josh Olson as the new director of Community & Economic Development, culminating a selection process that began earlier this January. In this capacity, Olson will be at the helm of enhancing quality of life through maintaining and expanding the housing landscape, developing infrastructure, and promoting local business growth, all while managing a significant $25 million budget with a team of 14 individuals.
According to Ramsey County's statement, the department has a dedication to improve not only housing and infrastructure but also to "navigating economic development resources," a mission that Josh Olson is set to actively further. Kari Collins, Economic Growth & Community Investment Deputy County Manager, expressed her enthusiasm about the appointment: "I am thrilled Josh Olson has accepted the director of Community & Economic Development role. Josh is community focused and has demonstrated a deep commitment to building strong partnerships, and innovative solutions, making him the ideal candidate to continue to evolve and strengthen the department's impact on our community for years to come."
Olson's journey with Ramsey County began in 2009, and he has ascended through various progressive leadership roles, recently holding the position of interim Community & Economic Development director since February 2024. His résumé boasts of pivotal projects like RiversEdge and the execution of the American Rescue Plan Act funding aimed at affordable housing. Previous roles include overseeing the transformation of the Twin Cities Army Ammunition Plant into what's now known as Rice Creek Commons and managing projects for county transit corridors.
His education and experience in the field are equally robust. Olson is a holder of a Master of Urban and Regional Planning degree from the University of Colorado, Denver, and a Bachelor of Arts from Valparaiso University, Indiana. His expertise extends beyond the county lines, having had stints in community development departments in Douglas County, Colorado, and the city of Arvada. He is also an active participant in local efforts, contributing his executive leadership to the Public Development and Infrastructure Council of the Urban Land Institute, and is a member of both the American Planning Association and the Economic Development Association of Minnesota.
In a recent declaration, Olson shared his sentiments regarding his new role: "I am truly honored to step fully into this role and continue working alongside such an amazing team and dedicated partners. Together, we will build on the progress we’ve made and continue to advance the critical housing and economic work that will create lasting change and opportunity for our community." Olson will embark on his new journey as the director of Community & Economic Development starting Monday, April 14.
