Tragedy struck in the Mililani area of Oahu early Saturday morning, as a juvenile passenger lost their life in a road accident. The crash occurred on Kamehameha Highway near the Kipapa Gulch Bridge around 4:30 a.m., as confirmed by local authorities. KHON2 reported that the incident involved a 33-year-old male driver and his underage passenger, with recklessness behind the wheel possibly at play.

According to the Honolulu Police Department, the driver was allegedly speeding and attempting to overtake other vehicles when he lost control. The mishap led to the vehicle crossing into the opposing traffic lane, crashing into a fence, and subsequently colliding with a guardrail — during which the juvenile was ejected onto the roadway. KITV reports indicated that speed and alcohol were significant factors in the crash, however, it is currently unknown if drugs were also a contributing factor.

The aftermath saw both the driver and his young passenger transported to Queen’s Medical Center in critical condition. Despite the efforts of medical personnel, the juvenile could not overcome the injuries sustained and was later pronounced dead. The driver's actions have led to his arrest on counts of second-degree negligent homicide, as he is being held responsible for the fatal result of his decisions at the wheel.

This incident marks Oahu's 22nd traffic-related fatality this year. This figure starkly surpasses the nine fatalities recorded around the same time last year, presenting a worrying increase in dangerous driving and its consequences. Investigations by HPD are ongoing.
