On April 30, residents and visitors to Kaua'i may notice an increased presence of rescue boats and personnel at the Port Allen Small Boat Harbor and in the waters off Hanapēpē. This is part of a multi-agency search and rescue exercise led by the United States Coast Guard, in collaboration with local agencies. The exercise will run from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. and will simulate maritime emergencies to enhance preparedness for real incidents, according to the County of Kauai.
The County of Kauai has partnered with the Coast Guard for a first responder readiness exercise. Mayor Derek S.K. Kawakami expressed gratitude to all participants, including the Kaua'i Police and Fire Departments, the Ocean Safety Bureau, and other local agencies.
Cmdr. Kyra Dykeman of the Coast Guard Sector Honolulu stated that simulation exercises are important for testing coordination and readiness. She added, "Every opportunity to collaborate strengthens our collective readiness and ensures a more unified, effective response when real-world incidents occur." Kaua‘i Fire Department Chief Michael Gibson also emphasized the value of the exercises, saying, "This exercise is a testament to the strength of our partnerships and the dedication of our first responders." Officials are asking the public to stay clear of marked training areas and not distract the personnel or equipment involved, as stated by the County of Kauai.
