The Ocean Safety Bureau is preparing to offer the Keiki and Junior Lifeguard programs for Kaua'i youth this summer. Registration opens online on May 1 at 7:45 a.m. on the County of Kauai's official website, with no cost to join. The Keiki program is for children ages 8 to 11 who can swim and run 50 yards, while the Junior Lifeguard program is for ages 12 to 17, requiring the ability to swim and run 100 yards. Spots are limited.

The training focuses on both physical endurance and ocean safety. Free sessions will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on various dates between June 9 and July 25 at locations such as Salt Pond Beach, Hanalei Pavilion, and Kalapakī Beach. The training will end with a State championship at Ka‘anapali Beach on Maui on August 9. Participants must bring lunch, sunscreen, goggles, and a towel each day, according to the County of Kauai.

The 2025 Keiki and Junior Lifeguard programs are sponsored by the County of Kauai, Kaua‘i Lifeguard Association, Hawaiian Lifeguard Association, and local businesses. A birth certificate is required for each participant. Individuals needing accommodations due to a disability can contact Kalani Vierra at 808-241-4984 or [email protected]. Advance notice is recommended for accommodations. Additional details and alternate formats are available upon request.
