On Wednesday, April 23, a wastewater spill occurred in Wailua when about 6,000 gallons of sewage were released from the Coco Palms Sewer Pump Station. The spill happened between 4 p.m. and 5 p.m. due to a failure in the electrical components that control the primary pumps and backup generators, according to the County of Kauai.
A spill occurred near the pump station but did not reach state waters. The material was quickly pumped out, and the area was disinfected to reduce environmental impact. The Wastewater Management Division reported that they are making electrical repairs and working to prevent similar incidents, as mentioned by the County of Kauai.
