In a move to advance environmental responsibility, Lakewood's Division of Refuse and Recycling has inaugurated a lithium battery recycling program, in partnership with the Cuyahoga County Solid Waste District. This initiative, rolled out yesterday, ensures that residents have a proper channel to dispose of household lithium batteries, such as AA, AAA, C, D, 9V, and those tiny but essential watch batteries. The program promises to help reduce the landfill impact and mitigate potential hazards associated with the improper disposal of these familiar power sources.
According to the details posted on the city's official website, sizable rechargeable lithium batteries—from power tools, electronic gadgets, to laptops and power banks—are excluded from this program. However, residents don't have to hoard these larger batteries; several big-box home goods and office supply retailers have stepped into the breach, offering recycling services for such items. This dual approach streamlines the recycling process, catering to different kinds of lithium batteries through multiple channels.
To participate in the battery recycling program, Lakewood citizens are required to prepare their batteries by safely taping over their terminals. This precaution is mandatory—it prevents the onset of fires that could endanger both workers and the recycling facility itself. The city’s initiative is designed with safety at its forefront, helping to avert potential hazards that stem from the improper handling of these energy stores.
Residents ready to dispose of their household lithium batteries can now visit the local Refuse and Recycling Center. The center sets a beacon, leading the way in responsible waste disposal. On-site guidance ensures that individuals understand the importance of following the safety instructions—such as taping battery terminals—before submission.
