The skateboard wheels are rolling, and Lāna‘i's youth have a new reason to cheer with the grand opening of their very own skatepark and youth center, which took place last Saturday. It's not just a place to nail kickflips and grinds, though—this park represents a broader community spirit that is always worth noting. According to Maui County's announcement, the ceremony kicked off with words from Patrick McCall, the Director of Maui County Department of Parks and Recreation, who voiced his appreciation for everyone who chipped in towards the skatepark and youth center’s creation, noting that spaces like these lay the groundwork for community bonding and youth success.
During the celebration attended by Maui County suits, local bigwigs, and a pumped crowd, Director McCall dug into the sentiment that these new digs are “a testament to the County’s commitment to our keiki, our families and the bright future of this community,” adding, “More importantly, today reminds us of what we can accomplish when we work together—administration and council, government and community, departments and agencies—all united by a shared vision,” he said, capturing the collaborative spirit that apparently made the project possible. Right after, Lāna‘i Councilmember Gabe Johnson, the cheerleader for the youth center and skatepark effort, got real about the importance of fostering such community hubs where old and young can bunch together, make a treasure trove of memories and cook up traditions slated to last for generations.
With traditions in mind, the event followed the local custom with Lāna‘i resident Samson Aki sounding the pū—conch shell, for the mainlanders out there—signaling a blessing by Deacon Henry Costales and Father Marcial Maglana from the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary Catholic Church. These are solemn moments offering a glimpse into the community's heart and values.
No grand opening is complete without some fun and treats. After the ceremony, attendees enjoyed freebies like shaved ice and cotton candy, along with essential gear like helmets and pads, plus free skateboard rentals for keiki ready to try out the new skatepark. Local skaters of all levels hit the decks, with contests and prize-winning stunts by One Love Skate.
