Honolulu is getting a soggy, unsettled Tuesday as Hurricane Lowell pulls away from Hawaii but leaves behind frequent showers, gusty winds and dangerous surf. Oahu could reach 87 degrees, with the heat index near 97, but the bigger concern is flooding rain and rough coastal conditions.
Rain And Gusty Winds Ease This Afternoon
Frequent showers are expected through the morning, with rain chances around 80% and south-southwest winds of 10 to 21 mph. Gusts could reach 29 mph, while heavier downpours may quickly overwhelm flood-prone roads, low-lying areas and poor-drainage spots.
The National Weather Service in Honolulu has kept a Tropical Storm Warning in effect for Oahu, including Honolulu Metro, East Honolulu and Kaimuki, while a Flood Watch remains in effect through Tuesday afternoon. The agency says winds should ease from late morning into the afternoon, though showers will continue into the evening.
Stay Away From South-Facing Shores
A High Surf Warning remains in effect through 6 p.m. Tuesday for south-facing shores, where waves could reach 15 to 25 feet around Oahu before dropping quickly later in the day. Powerful currents, wave run-up and sudden surges onto beaches, coastal benches and exposed roads are possible, so this is not a good day for a casual shoreline visit.
Hoodline previously reported on the storm's approach when the focus was still on building surf and the possibility of tropical-storm conditions. Tuesday's update is more immediate: residents should stay alert for flooded streets, falling branches, power interruptions and rapidly changing conditions as Lowell's trailing moisture moves across the islands.
Showers Linger Through The Weekend
Tuesday night brings scattered showers and a low near 78 degrees. Wednesday should be partly sunny with a high near 88 and a 60% chance of showers, while Thursday and Friday remain warm in the mid-80s with scattered or occasional showers.
Conditions trend somewhat drier by Saturday, when Honolulu could see mostly sunny skies and a 30% chance of showers. More scattered showers remain possible Sunday and Monday, with highs in the mid-to-upper 80s.
