The Las Cruces Police Department, honoring fallen Officer Jonah Hernandez, is gearing up for the 2025 edition of Operation Not in Vain. Set to commence on April 28, this law enforcement initiative is a dedicated effort to suppress violent crime in the city, while also forging an enduring legacy for an officer who made the ultimate sacrifice. The collaborative enforcement project, which first took place in 2024, is a tribute to Hernandez, who was killed in the line of duty on February 11, 2024, after responding to a trespassing call, according to the Las Cruces Police Department.

Hernandez, a former resident of El Paso, Texas, had served with the Las Cruces Police Department for two years. The upcoming operation, named in his memory, carries a strong message of continuity and purpose. "Our first Not in Vain operation was extremely successful and underscored the importance of collaboration among local, state and federal law enforcement agencies," said Jeremy Story, Chief of the Las Cruces Police Department. "This year, we’re looking to refine those collaborations, continue pursuing initiatives that make Las Cruces a safer city and keep the memory of Jonah alive in the city he served," as obtained by the Las Cruces Police Department.

The multi-agency operation involves the Las Cruces Police Department, New Mexico State Police, the Dona Ana County Sheriff’s Office, the Third Judicial District Attorney’s Office, the U.S. Attorney’s Office, along with several other federal agencies. Officers will increase their uniformed presence, especially in areas prone to violent crime. They will also target the habitual offenders and those known for stirring up violent crime in the community.
