In what stands to be a substantial service of support to those who have served, the County Assessor's Office in Las Cruces has announced a Property Tax Waiver and Exemption Event for veterans. Scheduled for April 24 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., this event aims to aid eligible veterans and the unmarried widows of veterans in applying for property tax waivers or exemptions. The venue, Multipurpose Room 111 at the Government Center, will become a hub for those seeking to navigate the complexities of House Bill 47, or HB47, as it wields the promise of increased financial relief for veterans.
A collaboration between the Assessor’s Office and the New Mexico Department of Veterans’ Services has made this day possible, providing a no-cost opportunity to veterans who are eligible for the exemptions provided by recent constitutional amendments. Specifically, HB47 has raised a veteran's property tax exemption from $4,000 to $10,000 and introduced a proportional property tax exemption aligned with the percentage of service-related disability. Assistance will be at the ready for those in need, and required documents such as the DD Form 214 and proof of New Mexico Residency should be presented, as reported by Doña Ana County.
Underlining the significance of HB47, veterans afflicted with a service-connected permanent and total disability rating of 100% are granted a full waiver from property tax payments on their primary residence. The initiative acknowledges the price paid in service and the ongoing weight of such sacrifices upon the shoulders of veterans, affirming the state’s commitment to easing their financial burdens.
No booking is required for the event, allowing veterans to seize the potential for economic ease spontaneously. Questions and concerns ahead of the event can be directed to the County Assessor's Office by calling 575.647.7400, or to Jeff George, Benefits Bureau Chief at the Department of Veterans' Services at 505.699.4087. According to Doña Ana County, the resources allocated to this effort mark a continuation of dedication to those who have dedicated their lives in military service.
