Commuters on Interstate 290 in Auburn encountered an unexpected disruption yesterday evening when a 10,000-gallon tank harboring liquid oxygen disengaged from a flatbed truck. The Auburn Fire Department, which attended the scene around 6:15 p.m., initially described the situation as involving an "unknown substance" of "pressurized vapor," as reported by MassLive. The wayward tank, which partly blocked the eastbound side near the Route 12 ramp, prompted the dispatch of a Hazardous Materials response team.
Officials urged the public to keep a distance while they managed the incident, which saw no immediate threat to bystanders. During the ordeal, neither the truck driver nor the initial responders were aware of the contents, yet the tank did not bear any markers to indicate its potentially hazardous cargo. Later confirmation revealed that the tank contained residual liquid oxygen, the substance being used previously to clean it before transport, according to MassLive. Despite the potential for trepidation among the onlookers and drivers halted by the massive cylinder intruding upon the right lane, the situation was described as stable.
NBC Boston provided additional details on the emergency procedures, indicating that a Tier 1 hazardous materials response was requested by the Auburn Fire Department. This level of response, specific to "Suspicious Substances, Open or Loose Suspicious Powders," usually entails a more contained approach, one that is designed for less severe scenarios, which, in this case, aligned with the non-placarded nature of the tank and its subsequently identified non-threatening contents. The information was further elaborated in a social media post made by fire officials at 6:25 p.m., as noted by NBC Boston.
Efforts to safely remove the oxygen tank ensued for approximately three hours, ultimately leading to the reopening of the highway around 9:15 p.m., thus ending the temporary immobilization of the traffic flow. The successful clearance of the scene allowed for an unobstructed passage, and notably, the driver of the flatbed truck involved in the incident was unharmed. The Auburn Fire Department was quoted stating that the obstruction was eventually handled without harm to the public, though no further information was made available immediately, as per NBC Boston.
