The aftermath of the fire at Happy Cat Sanctuary in Long Island continues to unfold in heart-wrenching developments. According to a recent update from CBS News, an additional 54 cats have been found deceased, raising the total number of animal casualties to over 160. The fire, which occurred last week, also claimed the life of sanctuary owner Chris Arsenault.
Local animal rescue organizations such as the Strong Island Animal Rescue League and Paws of War have been rigorously searching the debris for survivors. According to these groups, over 160 cats are currently receiving care off-site. Frankie Floridia from Strong Island Animal Rescue League mentioned in a social media video, "Today has been a gruesome day as far as finding out how many more cats were actually in the house, once we got some access to the house," as noted by CBS News.
Additional reporting by Patch detailed volunteers' struggles as they persisted in their search despite inclement weather. They were not prepared for the scale of devastation encountered. "They have seen everything come to their hospitals, but they were not prepared for this today," said Robert Misseri of Paws of War.
As the recovery mission winds down, teams are continuing to assess the neighborhood for any remaining cats that may have escaped the property. Misseri told Patch, "We're going to continue to do that until we feel we have exhausted every effort that anything else can't be alive."
The investigation into the cause of the fire continues, with authorities currently ruling out any suspicions and suggesting a space heater may have been involved. Meanwhile, local volunteers and veterinary staff are doing everything they can to ensure the surviving animals receive the necessary care and find new homes, honoring the memory of Arsenault and the sanctuary he built.
