The incident left a 17-year-old high school student and a 28-year-old man dead. As reported by ABC7 New York, the violence unfolded near Oceania Street and 48th Avenue, where police responded to a 911 call about an assault in progress.
Precinct officers discovered Neo Secaira with a chest wound, and Frank Liu, with a gunshot to the head. Despite the rush to New York-Presbyterian Queens Hospital, efforts to save them were in vain as both were pronounced dead. Details from a Daily News interview with a neighbor, who preferred to stay anonymous, painted a chilling picture stating, "It was scary. Things like this don't happen in this neighborhood. It's always very quiet."
According to police sources, the assailant, Liu, and the victim, Secaira, were both romantically involved with the same woman who witnessed the horrific act. It appears, tension had been brewing in the triangle prior to this tragedy. The scene was described by a local resident, identified only as Sarah, to Daily News, "I heard her before the second round of shooting,” she said. "That’s when I heard her screaming and then the shots rang out again."
Neo Secaira, the young victim, was remembered for his commitment to his school's swim team and his generosity amidst an otherwise ordinary life – a sentiment echoed by touching social media posts from friends and an ex-girlfriend. In a stark contrast, Liu, was described as quiet and unproblematic by his building's superintendent, who told the Daily News that the last he'd seen of Liu was with a young woman laughing and talking.
