In a sober courtroom session in Salem, Thiago Oliveira faced a judge for the arraignment on charges of murdering Carla Lourenco Da Silva. As the Essex County District Attorney's Office reports, Oliveira, hailing from Lynn, stands accused of staging Da Silva's death to appear as a suicide in January. The alleged crime took place at a residence on Summer Street, also in Lynn.
During the video-conferenced proceedings, Oliveira entered a plea of not guilty. This judicial episode marks an additional chapter to Oliveira's legal woes, which began just days after the purported suicide, as he was charged with misleading a police investigation. An agreement between prosecution and defense ensures Oliveira remains in custody without bail. The Chief of the Homicide Unit, Jessica Strasnick, represented the Commonwealth and declared Oliveira's actions to be premeditated murder, according to the district attorney's announcement.
The language barrier was bridged in court as an English-to-Portuguese interpreter stood by Oliveira, facilitating his understanding of the proceedings. The defense, led by attorney Patrick Hakes, will reconvene on May 14, where discovery motions are on the docket, signaling the next step in a case that weaves together allegations of deception and violence.
