Big changes are coming to Gilroy's roadways as a new chapter unfolds for the U.S. 101 and State Route 25 interchange. Starting next Wednesday, permanent road closures will be a reality, the Valley Transportation Authority announced. Certain streets like Castro Valley Road and Mesa Road will no longer grant access to U.S. 101. Instead, a new, lengthened southbound off-ramp destined for SR 25 will materialize, intended to untangle the notorious traffic snarls and bolster commuter safety.

The undertaking, dubbed Phase 1 of the upgrade project, will prompt locals and travelers heading to Gavilan College to recalibrate their routes. According to the VTA, a necessary detour will thread them via Monterey Road onto W. Luchessa Avenue, then to Thomas Road, and finally spill onto Santa Teresa Boulevard. Built to be double the length of the former off-ramp.

Embracing the needs of the cycling community plans for a fresh bike path alongside the off-ramp have also been announced. Cyclists will be granted entry from a roundabout, which is to take root at Castro Valley Road's terminus. The handy addition furnishes a secure conduit linking Santa Teresa Blvd to the 101/25 interchange.
