Travelers along US 24 from Florissant to Woodland Park can expect to navigate through construction as a major resurfacing project kicks off today, April 28. The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) announced the undertaking, which is slated for completion in November 2025. This extensive project covers approximately 12 miles of highway, extending from mile point 269.4 in Florissant to mile point 281 just west of Woodland Park.
The goal is to provide a smoother and more durable road surface, yet during the improvement phase, drivers should be prepared for closures. The mentioned construction works will be done not only on US 24 but also on CO 67 in Woodland Park, from the intersection with US 24/CO 67 at mile point 76.9 to Red Feather Lane at mile point 77.5. Delays are anticipated, in some instances, reaching up to 15 minutes due to single-lane closures and alternating traffic, as reported by CDOT.
Further details highlight the scope of the initiative, wherein old asphalt will be milled away and replaced with new pavement, guardrails will be upgraded, and curb and gutter enhancements made. Alongside the improved aesthetics and road resilience, a noteworthy safety upgrade includes the installation of new guardrails, standing at 31 inches tall to align with contemporary safety standards, according to CDOT. Motorists are required, reduced speeds in the construction zones, to follow the posted speed limits.
Work hours will straddle both day and night throughout the week to expedite this project's completion. Daytime operations are scheduled from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. from Monday to Thursday, tapering off by noon on Friday. For those traveling outside traditional work hours, nighttime work may extend from 8 p.m. to 7 a.m., beginning on Sunday night through to early Friday morning. For more insight and updates, travelers are directed to the comprehensive information made available on CDOT's website.
