Morristown Police Department's standoff with 38-year-old Roy Ray Herron ended in his arrest at a west Morristown apartment complex, according to a department statement. Herron, who was previously wanted for contempt of court in Hamblen County, as well as a probation violation in Sevier County, now also faces charges of evading arrest and resisting arrest, reports WVLT.
The incident began when the department's Criminal Apprehension Unit spotted Herron at the complex, knowing his warrant status, and attempted to detain him. However, Herron chose to flee into an apartment, barricading himself inside. Considering Herron's history of "violent tendencies," officials decided to create a secure perimeter while waiting for the Special Response Team and additional officers to arrive at the scene. "MPD Criminal Apprehension Unit members held perimeter until members of the MPD Special Response Team and patrol officers responded tot he apartment complex," described WVLT.
Authorities tried communicating with Herron, using a loudspeaker to coax him out. Nevertheless, he remained unresponsive. Upon searching the premises, officers located Herron hiding in the attic of the apartment. After the standoff, officers searched the apartment Herron was seen entering and located him in the attic. He was then taken into custody without any further incident, WATE reported. He was apprehended without further disturbances.
