A man has died following a shooting incident in Northwest Jacksonville, with the investigation currently ongoing. The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office stated that officers responded to reports of a man shot in the 7400 block of New Kings Road around 5 p.m. on Friday. Upon arrival, they discovered a man suffering from a gunshot wound to the upper torso, who was subsequently rushed to the hospital by the Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department where he succumbed to his injuries, First Coast News reported.
Witness statements indicate that an "altercation occurred between the victim and an unknown adult male" prior to the shooting incident, during the course of which the suspect is alleged to have fired the fatal shot and then fled the scene in a dark-colored vehicle, and these details echo across multiple sources like News4Jax, which also notes that the exact relationship between the individuals involved and the circumstances leading to the argument remain undetermined by authorities at this time.
Local residents have expressed distress and grave concerns over the senselessness of the violence plaging their community, as Action News Jax reported. "I think it's very, very, extremely sad that we constantly just killing each other like that," lamented Penny Lockwood, a neighbor, calling for non-violent resolutions and more protection from law enforcement. Barbara Nicholas, another local, urged for increased police presence, saying, "We need some police officers out here. Put ya boots on the ground … where the feds at, let's get it on."
The urgency to apprehend the shooter is palpable among the community members, as Nicholas was quoted inferring a sense of vigilante justice if the authorities are not expedient, "They better get him before JSO … JSO better get him before I get him," indicating a distrust and frustration towards the pace at which the investigation and subsequent actions were being conducted, as per Action News Jax.
