A man was fatally shot by police officers on US-127 near Barnes Road in Vevay Township after an incident involving the individual wielding multiple knives. The confrontation occurred around 4 p.m. Sunday. The Ingham County Sheriff’s Office initially responded to a call which reported a man walking against traffic, creating a potential hazard for himself and drivers, , according to a briefing posted on WILX website.
Upon arrival, the responding officers found the man on the freeway, claiming he was non-compliant and armed. As noted in a release on WLNS, the situation escalated when the man brandished "multiple knives". Despite attempts to de-escalate the confrontation, police personnel eventually resorted to using lethal force. After the shooting occurred, officers performed life-saving measures, but, the man died at the scene.
During the incident, one officer received minor injuries and was subsequently treated at a hospital. The highway was closed for several hours following the altercation but eventually reopened. The Michigan State Police have been tasked with leading the investigation into the shooting, as confirmed in reports on both WILX and WLNS.
Law enforcement clarified that the man was not handcuffed during the police confrontation, despite claims in a social media video. The man's identity and details of the officers involved are being withheld for now, and the Ingham County Sheriff's Office is asking for the community’s patience and prayers as the investigation continues, as per WLNS.
