A man has been pronounced dead following an early Tuesday shooting in Chicago's Edgewater neighborhood. The incident took place in the 6000 block of North Sheridan Road, where Chicago police found a 37-year-old man suffering from a gunshot wound. According to the Chicago Sun-Times, first responders located the victim around 2:15 a.m., lying on the ground. He was promptly taken to St. Francis Hospital in Evanston but did not survive his injuries.
Initially, there was confusion surrounding the number of gunshot wounds the man had sustained. Police clarified that the victim had been shot only once, with the bullet hitting his inner right thigh. This detail was later revised to accurately reflect that it solely involved a single gunshot wound. Despite the efforts of law enforcement to quickly and thoroughly examine the scene, no suspects are currently in custody, as CBS News Chicago reports that Area Three detectives are still investigating the circumstances of the shooting as a death investigation.
The aftermath of the incident had police scouring the vicinity for evidence, including within the premises of the Malibu East Condominium building and along the neighboring lakefront. Flashlights illuminated the early morning search as officers combed through potential clues that could shed light on the events that transpired preceding the fatal shooting. The effort extended into the corners of the residential high-rise and the adjacent areas, pointing to a thorough on-site investigation.
